Growth and Expansion Fellow

Nova Pioneer is looking for an outstanding professional with experience managing complex projects to help drive the expansion of its world-class schools across Kenya. This is an opportunity to help grow a transformative education model that will shape the future of Africa’s youth. The fellowship will be based in Nairobi, Kenya for a period of at least 6 months.

Imagine a world in which every young person in Africa attends a school that truly sets them up for success in the 21st century. A school that demands excellence, helps students learn by doing and exploring rather than by memorizing, equips students with globally competitive science and technology skills, and builds the character that will enable them to shape a better future for the continent.

Now imagine that this school is not in one town, in one country, but across Kenya and the continent. This is what we imagine, and we want you to help make it happen.

We launched two years ago to build the first pan-African network of high-quality and affordable primary and secondary schools. In 2017 we are operating six schools—four in South Africa and two in Kenya and are preparing for rapid growth. Our vision is to launch 100 schools and serve tens of thousands of students across the continent over the next decade.

We have a unique, entrepreneurial work environment with a strong team culture that is designed to reinforce our vision. The core elements of our culture include:

  • We model the growth mindset we want our students to embody: you are challenged every day and, as a result, you grow more than at any other point in your life
  • We pursue excellence in every detail and do whatever it takes to produce great work quickly
  • We are radically open: we share tough messages and our own vulnerabilities because doing so helps us grow
  • We put our students before our team, and our team before ourselves
  • We bring infectious energy, enthusiasm and fun to everything we do because joy fuels the hardest work and learning

We are looking for an exceptional individual to be the cutting-edge of our work to rapidly expand our transformational education model. The Fellow will work closely with the Managing Director and Director of Operations for East Africa as well as coordinate projects across a range of other teams and individuals throughout the organization. The Manager must be able to also work highly independently to drive new initiatives with minimal direction. Key responsibilities will be:

  • Project-managing the establishment of our new schools by providing oversight over all launch-focused work-streams across organization - ensuring clear communication, well-managed interdepartmental co-ordination, and smooth implementation
  • Exploring new geographic expansion opportunities through visiting sites, managing relationships with key partners, undertaking financial analysis and conducting detailed research
  • Developing analysis and providing recommendations to drive data-driven decisions for school operations - including those for property, staffing, asset financing, etc.
  • Driving the exploration and development of key new strategic initiatives, such as the launch of a teacher training college and the expansion into new countries in the region, among others
  • Sourcing, analyzing and structuring of key strategic financing deals to fund our continued growth

The fellowship is based in our regional headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya and comes with a stipend to cover living costs. The fellowship is for a minimum of six months with the potential to extend or transition into a permanent role in the organization based on performance.
