Learning Designer

Nova Pioneer is looking for a rising-star educator to serve as Learning Designer and help shape the learning experience at the heart of our vision. You will drive the design of assessments, unit plans, lessons, and projects that go far beyond the core standards. This is an opportunity to create a transformative school model with the future of Africa’s youth at stake.

Imagine a world in which every young person in Africa attends a school that truly sets them up for success in the 21st century. A school that demands excellence, helps students learn by doing and exploring rather than by memorizing, equips students with globally competitive science and technology skills, and builds the character and creativity that will shape the rest of their lives.

Now imagine that this school is not in one town, in one country, but in every town, in every country. This is what we imagine, and we want you to help make it happen.

In 2014 we launched a new venture to build the first pan-African network of high-quality, affordable primary and secondary schools. This year we will be operating six schools—two in Nairobi and four in Johannesburg—and gearing up for rapid growth, initially across East and Southern Africa and eventually across West Africa as well. Our venture is structured as a social enterprise to enable us to attract the investment that will be needed to launch 100 schools and reach tens of thousands of students in the next decade.

We have a unique, entrepreneurial work environment with a strong team culture that is designed to reinforce our vision. The core elements of our culture include:

  • We model the growth mindset we want our students to embody: you are challenged every day and, as a result, you grow more than at any other point in your life
  • We hold high expectations for everyone and set a high bar for our staff and students alike
  • We believe in servant leadership and consistently put our students before our team, and our team before ourselves
  • We bring infectious energy, enthusiasm and fun to everything we do because joy fuels the hardest work and learning

We are looking for an exceptional individual to help revolutionize the way 21st century skills and knowledge are developed in African schools. You will be a central member of the team that develops the learning model to power Nova Pioneer schools as we expand. We are looking for candidates to be based in either Nairobi, Kenya or Johannesburg, South Africa.

Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • Lead the development of our curricula in one of our focus countries by incorporating best practices from around the world and collaborating across schools and countries
  • Create deep experiential learning projects that develop core critical thinking skills
  • Design assessments that measure progress towards critical thinking and other major outcomes of our model
  • Create detailed curriculum maps for subjects to be used by all our teachers and schools
  • Write strong, creative lessons that lead to high student engagement and practice of the subject
  • Gather extensive feedback from teachers and analyze data to constantly identify ways to modify lessons and projects to improve outcomes

  • You have 2+ years of teaching experience in a rigorous, high-expectations setting
  • You have a track record of developing creative and rigorous curriculum that has led to distinctive learning outcomes and can demonstrate this through example products and references
  • You are driven by data and can use data from student assessments to strengthen lessons and spiral in key ski
  • You have a desire to further develop your curriculum development skills and apply them to transform the lives of African youth
  • You have strong writing skills and are able to use those to create lessons that will help people learn it while being engaged and interested

Does working at Nova Pioneer Academies excite you? If you’re a great fit, we will drop everything and call you immediately.
